Just in case any of you KPOPPERS readers followed Son Dam-bi on Twitter thinking it was actually her, it’s not!
This has become a big issue in Korea because Twitter makes it too easy for someone to make a fake profile as a celebrity and act as if they are the real deal.
Son Dam-bi’s agency has officially announced that this is not the singer’s Twitter account because this a serious matter that can not only be fatal to her image but also her career. Son Dam-bi’s agency made the announcement because of a recent message that was left on the fake Son Dam-bi’s Twitter account stating, “I want an iPhone”. Having been the model for Samsung’s Anycall mobile phone for the past few years, she has only been using Anycall mobile phones since then. It would look bad for her career as Samsung’s model if she promoted the usage of another mobile phone brand, other than the one she is marketing. In the worst case scenario, the message of wanting an iPhone, could have ended her contract with Samsung if they believed it was really Son Dam-bi and took legal action.
Even if they traced the IP address of the fake Son Dam-bi and found the user, no legal actions can be taken because more than likely, the user is a foreigner living outside of Korea. When signing up for Twitter, there is no process to authenticate that the person signing up for an account is really who they claim to be, making it easy to fake an identity. This isn’t the first incident where a Twitter account turned out to be fake. Currently, Twitter is working out a system for identification verification, but so far it is still in its beta stage and only a few limited high profile users are able to acquire a verification badge.
Be cautious when following celebrity accounts and don’t make an account using the name of a celebrity. You wouldn’t want to waste your time visiting a fake site with false information or worse, unintentionally damaging your favorite celebrities career.
